My Pokemon Shield adventure is finally over so it’s time for a little review!
Let’s start with this Pokemon’s strongest point: its CHARACTERS. I swear to god this has been one of the best cast of characters ever in a Pokemon game, if not the best, thanks to the MARVELOUS DESIGNS and their great backstories/subplots. On top of that, the TRIO OF RIVALS has been THE BEST we have ever gotten, and the gym leaders? ALSO THE BEST CAST OF LEADERS WE HAVE EVER SEEN.
Hop has the best character development out of every character, literally passed from 0 to 100. Marnie was the character I was looking forward to the most, and while she is quite underused, I LOVED her a lot. Bede also got a great development and I loved what they did with him.
The gym leaders are all so full of personality this time. Old lifeless gym leaders pale in comparison, except some exceptions.
Then, regarding gameplay, oh god I LOVED the gym leader battles this time. I swear to god they made them so epic, it’s not even normal. They got me SO hyped up.
The Wild Area was a great idea but could use a lot of improvement yet, sadly. I still liked it anyways.
Honestly? I don’t even care about the National Dex. I never transfer pokemon from past games since that feels like literally ripping the entire adventure you had on your past games. I feel like the Pokemon you catch in a game, must remain in that game. But I specially appreciate the fact that SO MANY pokemon can be caught in THIS game without having to transfer them from other games
Now, moving onto the MUSIC, oh boy. A FANTASTIC work as always, Pokemon never fails to disappoint in this aspect. Every battle theme. Every city/route theme. Every encounter theme. They nailed it.
Finally, we got the STORY and… Eh… Yeah. Super weak. Rushed villain. No apparent explained motives. Not a single meaningful story event until the end. Yeah. But I didn’t really mind, the Gym Challenge was so enjoyable that I can’t complain.
IN CONCLUSION, a VERY solid entry for Pokemon in my opinion. A decent 8/10 for sure, and probably my 5th favourite mainline game in the franchise
2021’s note: Oh boy, would you believe me if I told you I literally built an entire living dex in this game? I still love how much more enjoyable it is to complete your pokedex in this entry and I had such a blast
I also played both DLCs thoroughly and… well, the 1st DLC is a flop but the 2nd DLC was much more enjoyable. Still, they could use a little more work
